It's final!!!

Our adoption is final!

Since Michael and Matthew came home on an IR-4 Visa, it is required that we finalize the adoption here in America, basically re-adopt them, in order for them to become US citizens.  Today was the day, exactly 3 months to the day since we brought the boys home.

We went down to the courthouse, briefly met with our dear friend and attorney, along with the Judge,  then answered a few questions and viola....DONE!  It was a very quick and painless proceeding.

We are now legally the proud parents to Matthew and Michael...though we have been their mommy and daddy in our hearts for almost a year since we first laid eyes on them via Reece's Rainbow.

WDSD ~ Our Three reasons to CELEBRATE!!!

Today is World Down Syndrome Day.

Our family celebrates the uniqueness of our children every day.  All 8 of our children are unique in their own right.  Some have 46 chromosomes and some have 47.  Some have blue eyes, some have green, one has brown, one has hazel...all are loved exactly the same!  They were each made for a specific purpose and are wonderfully, miraculously made.

 Psalm 139:13 says,
"For You created my inmost being: You knit me together in my mother's womb."

Justin ~ Today

 ...and then there were THREE!

Michael ~ Today!

Matthew ~ Today!

So on this day, what do I want you to know about Down syndrome?

People with Down syndrome have one extra copy of the 21st chromosome.  There are actually three types of Down syndrome: Standard Trisomy 21, Translocation and Mosaic.  All three types have the extra 21st chromosome in varying degrees.  All of the chromosomes are perfectly normal, even the extra copy.  Having the extra 21st chromosome can cause characteristics and symptoms which vary between individuals.  Some people have very mild characteristics and symptoms while some people have more health and cognitive issues.  With modern medicine, health related symptoms can be successfully treated to minimize lasting effects.

I want you to know that people with Ds are people first!  They are very capable, have great talents and abilities, and are destined to become great men and women of God.  They are smart, they are funny and yes, they have an extra 21st chromosome.  Down syndrome does not define them.  It is just one part of who they are.

We fully expect our boys to grow up to be independent young men, go to college, get married, work hard and have children....that's right, we expect all these things!  It is possible!  Many people who have Ds are already leading the way, crushing the stereotypes by doing these very things and living long, full lives.  We expect no less!

And, yes, we also realize that not every person with Ds will achieve all of these things....for that matter, not every person without Ds will achieve all of these things.  Just sayin'...

Glad you stopped by to celebrate with us!

Don't forget to spread the word to end the word!  There is NEVER a reason to use the r-word...ever!  RESPECT is the true R-word!  Use it!  Believe it!  Spread it!

3-3-11...3 months since we first met

Today is 3-3-11....March 3.  Today marks 3 months since Jeff, Rachel and Kayla met Michael and Matthew for the very first time.  That's 90 days!  How can it only have been 3 months when it seems like they have always been in our family??  Funny how that works.  Here are a couple of pictures of that first day.  Oh my goodness, how they have changed and grown in the past 3 months!!!

No longer are their eyes glazed over from lack of stimulation.  No longer does their skin hang off their bones from starvation and dehydration.  No longer are they cold and hungry.  No longer are they alone.

Michael and Matthew are happy, energetic, joyful little boys today.  They have a mommy, daddy, brothers and sisters who adore them. Their eyes are bright and filled with wonder.  Their tummy's are full and they are gaining weight and growing.  It's been a GREAT 3 months and we cannot wait for the next 3 months...and the next...and the next...!

Look Whose Eating from a Spoon!

Michael and Matthew were never offered food from a spoon at the orphanage and took all their feedings from a bottle.  Michael is 4 1/2 and Matthew is 2.  To make matters more challenging, Michael has a significant tongue thrust that makes food go out instead of coming in to swallow.

They have been home for seven weeks and we have been slowly getting them used to the spoon and the taste of different foods.  Tonight we have success.  They BOTH allowed Rachel and I to spoon feed them without tears or fears!!!

Matthew has this eating thing down pat.  He opens, takes in the food, swallows and gets ready for more.  Michael would open and allow us to put the food into his mouth but had no clue how to get the food from the front of his mouth to the back in order to swallow it.  We will continue to work on this, but overall he did great just getting to this point!  This is a HUGE step for them and I am so proud of them both.  Enjoy the pics...

Another blessing in the form of a Triple Jogger

We have been looking at a particular triple jogging stroller ever since we first knew God was leading us to bring home Matthew and Michael.  Problem was....price!  These strollers are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E, unless you happen upon one on Craiglist.....happen upon we did!!!!  I did a search on the Dallas Craigslist praying to find one and low and behold...I found one!  The family who was selling it lives just a mile or two from my Aunt Kathy and she ran over and picked it up for us.  Thank you Kathy!!!  I cannot wait to get it home and take our three little boys on a walk in it!!  The BIG wheels will definitely go much better on our caliche road than the small-wheeled triple stroller I currently have.  Blessings come in all forms and I am grateful to have this one!  Thank you God!

Home 6 weeks...Successes and Challenges

Matthew and Michael have been home for 6 weeks yesterday....6 weeks! On one hand it has gone by fast, yet on the other hand it really seems like 6 weeks!

Both boys are doing well. They have both gained over 3 lbs each. They have moved up TWO sizes in diapers! I am amazed at their growth!! They will both look at us in the eye now...Matthew more often than Michael, but they do both do this now. They are coming to life....literally!

Matthew is sitting up better every day. We are working on his posture while sitting so he will get his shoulders in line with his hips and not slouch and topple over. He is not crawling yet but he rolls like nobody's business to get where he wants to go. Michael does an awesome army crawl and can pull himself up and has started cruising around the furniture this week. At this rate, he'll be walking before long!

As good as it has been going, there have been challenges.

Trimming nails: I've also noticed that their hair and nails grow at warp speed, literally, now that they have plenty of good nutrition. I can hardly keep up with trimming them before it is time to do it again. At first, Michael was terrified of the nail clippers. He CRIED and CRIED at the sight of them. I slowely started to show them to him, let him touch them and hold them. We did this for quite awhile but his nails were getting longer and he started to scratch himself so eventually, I did what had to be done.... I firmly held on to his hands and clipped with the speed of a ninja. It's getting MUCH better now. He still does not like me trimming his nails, but he does sit still for me with no tears. Progress!

Cutting hair: I've had to cut both boys hair already. Neither liked it one bit! Nope! I would go as far as to say they hated it with every fiber in their bodies! Yep...it was that bad! I showed them the trimmer, turned it on/off/on/off, let them touch it and hold it both off and then on and they did pretty well...until...I tried to trim their hair. You would have thought I poked them with a hot poker. I backed off and just let them touch and hold the trimmer off/on/off/on and we ended that first session on a good note.

Second session we repeated the above process with a little more success. This time I was able to run the trimmer through their hair somewhat so feeling this was progress, we again ended on a good note. Third session was way better. I actually got to trim around their ears and a little on their necks. We still have a ways to go to having a full hair cut, but we are getting there.

Bath time: Both are starting to like their baths finally. Just tonight, Matthew let me sit him up and he started splashing and batting at toys. Before now, he would only tolerate being laid down with no splashing or playing. He gave me the biggest smile tonight when he discovered how much fun bath time could be! Michael has been splashing for a couple of weeks but this week he is also enjoying putting toys in and out of his row boat while in the bath. It's really cute!

Brushing teeth: Well...it's getting better. They both had NEVER had their teeth brushed before and they were terrified when we tried. We learned to take it slow by touching their hands, then their lips, then their tongues with the back of the toothbrush. Once they accepted this, we did the same thing with the bristles. We still have to hold them firmly, but they pretty much let us brush their teeth without any tears now.

Some people have asked how *Jeff and I* are doing. We are doing good. We face this challenge like we face all our challenges...together. We tag-team a lot. We enlist the help of our older kids from time to time. We pray A LOT! Having 6 kids before bringing Michael and Matthew helped ease the transition I think. After all, we were already used to having a lot of kids and the work that goes into having a large family. We are no strangers to work.

There is one thing that has surprised me though.....the laundry! It has kinda taken on a life of it's own. I promise it has more than tripled. OH-MY-GOODNESS, having 9 people in the house does create a lot of laundry anyway but having three little boys creates A WHOLE LOT of laundry! I do many loads a day.

Other challenges: I have never has three in diapers at the same time or three not walking, or three who cannot feed themselves. It is a challenge trying to figure out how to physically do it. We're getting there. I think it just takes time and practice to learn what we can and cannot do. Oh, and patience...LOTS of patience. God knew what He was doing when He brought Matthew and Michael to us at this time in our lives! He knew we could handle this. It's not always easy, or pretty, or fun but it is always rewarding, special and right. I absolutely LOVE being the mother to our 8 kids no matter how challenging it can be!

So yeah, it's been 6 weeks since Michael and Matthew got home and it has been the best, most tiring, most challenging, incredible, loads-and-loads-of-laundry-every-day 6 weeks of my life and I would not change one thing!

Home ~ One month today

ONE month ago today, Matthew and Michael arrived in Lubbock, Texas into a family that unconditionally loves them, cherishes them and welcomes them with open arms.

Arriving in Lubbock, 12-24-10

Mommy holding Matthew for the first time

ONE month ago today, only 30 days ago, yet it seems like they have been in our family their whole lives!  We love them so much, so dearly, so completely.  Michael and Matthew are true blue Hannons through and through.

First Hannon family picture with all 10 of us

All 8 of our children

They were just meant to be a part of our family.  We were just meant to be their mommy and daddy, brothers and sisters.  God literally orchestrated this from the beginning of time and it is humbling to be a part of something so big.  We praise and thank God every single day for all 8 of our beautiful children.

Michael and Matthew continue to do well.  They are both eating and sleeping well and gaining weight.  They seem to be bonding quite well to us and we are bonding well to them.  It brings tears to my eyes to think about how far they have come in such a short time.

Michael is pulling up to stand on his own and is walking around holding on to things.  Matthew has learned to sit and sits for quite a long time now without toppling over.  They both smile and coo at all of us and hold their arms up for us to pick them up....and they cry when we put them down.   All good signs of bonding.  They cry when hungry now and cry when they wake up from naps and bedtime.  There was only silence the first week after they came home during these times.

I'll never forget that first morning after they arrived when I woke up and looked over to their port-a-cribs to check on them and there they lie, silent and still, not moving or making a sound yet wide awake.  I do not know how long they had been awake, laying silently.  I'm told this was orphanage behavior because they learned that crying was of no use, no one would come, no one.   Now, they know that they can CRY, HOLLER, CALL OUT for me and I'll be there!  Never again will they be alone, cold or hungry....never again!

Home only one month but forever in our hearts!!!

Playing and reading books this morning, home one month!

First time to go to church and an update on Michael's health

We serve a BIG God!  3 weeks and 4 days ago, Matthew and Michael lay in their cribs, hungry, cold and alone.    Yesterday they sat with our family in our Fathers house well fed, warm and surrounded by love.  Modern day miracles!  God is so incredibly good to us.  We thank Him for saving Matthew and Michael and continue to pray for those children we had to leave behind.  We pray that other Christian daddy's and mommies will choose to personally live James 1:27 and step out and be the hands and feet of Jesus!

As many of you know, Michael has had GI issues that quickly became an emergency situation last week.  The doctors in Cincinnati and in Lubbock came up with a plan of action to help Michael and it has worked!!  He is to take medicine twice a day and stay on a liquid diet until surgery.  Michael had x-ray studies done yesterday and the results were good!  So good, that we have been given another week to stay here and continue with the medication that is helping.  We are believing for a miracle and pray Michael will not need further surgery.  God is still a God of miracles!!

If God chooses for that miracle to come through a surgeons hands, we have the best and will gladly hand Michael over to Dr. Pena in Cincinnati so he can be the hands of Jesus and work His miracle through the gift of surgery.

God has this!

Home for 3 weeks

Michael and Matthew have been home for three weeks today.  They are doing AWESOME!  We love them so much and I believe they love us as well.  Both boys have gained 2 lbs already and have literally come to life!  They are looking at us more, holding their arms up to us to be held and then crying when we put them down.  They stop crying when we pick them back up.  These are all good signs of bonding!  Praise God!!  This was one of our prayer requests that has been answered!  They are both starting to babble a lot more and both know their names and turn to look at us when we call them.  Michael is starting to say "mamama" for Momma, "dadada" for Daddy and "ba" for bath.  It is incredible what love will do!

Here are a couple of pictures from this week just for fun...

Michael continues to have intestinal issues.  Our local doctors have recommended that we travel to Cincinnati Children's Hospital to have colorectal surgery by Dr. Alberto Pena.  Dr. Pena is literally the worlds best pediatric colorectal surgeon in the world and we are blessed to have him on our team!

Before we travel, Michael will have another round of x-ray studies this coming Monday and we'll see just how well the current medication has been working.  Holly and I will then travel with Michael to Ohio for treatment in the next week or so depending on what we find out with Michael's x-ray studies.  Jeff will stay behind to care for our other children.  We still have a couple of weeks of paid vacation left and then Jeff will have to take the Family Leave Act time off if need be.....we cannot take too much of this, mind you, as it is without pay.  We are thankful we have it if we need it though.

Our current prayer requests are that Michael will do well before, during and after surgery, recover quickly with no pain or other negative lasting affects and that we will only need to be in Cincy for a couple of weeks so Jeff will not have to take unpaid leave.

Surgery Update

Michael's surgery today was not successful on one hand since they were not able to completely fix the stricture but very successful on the other hand since we now know exactly what we need to do in order to help Michael.

The doctor actually found two strictures and they are both far stronger, thicker and larger than we had hoped. Now that the doctors have had a good look at Michael surgically, they are saying he needs extensive colorectal reconstructive surgery to fix this.  The team we used today could not do that type of surgery since they only specialize in intestinal issues.  We will now go see a surgeon who specializes in colorectal reconstructive surgery.  Since his lower intestine is almost completely closed off, time is of the essence so Jeff and I have to make some serious decisions by Monday.

Your prayers are so comforting!  Thank you all for covering Michael in prayer today through this.  He was such a little champ and handled everything very well.  I'll let everyone know as soon as we make our decision about where we will take Michael for this next round of treatment.

Michael is having surgery tomorrow

We went to the pediatric gastrointerologist today for a check-up for Michael and the doctor found an intestinal stricture that has almost completely closed off his lower intestine and the waste that must exit is not able to completely leave his body.  Surgery is in the morning at 8:30.  The doctor cautioned us that due to the severity of the stricture, it may take two surgeries to correct.

Please pray with us that everything can be corrected in one surgery and that Michael recovers quickly and fully.

Christmas 2010.....in Jan 2011

Today was a very special day for our family.  It was one of those days I wish we could freeze-frame and live in the moment for a little while longer. Our oldest son Wesley was able to come over and meet his two newest little brothers for the first time.  Watching them together was sweet beyond words!  Matthew and Michael really took to Wes and let him hold and play with them.

After all the introductions, we had a gigantic Christmas dinner...thank you, Rachel, for helping me cook all morning, and then we exchanged Christmas gifts!!  Matthew and Michael jumped right in there ripping open their wrapped gifts and playing with the paper and box's.   It was neat watching them observe Christmas for the first time!  Seeing all 8 of our children together for the first time was incredible.  What a special day!
